Time needed: 45–60 minutes
Materials needed:
Access to the internet, phone, or video chat
Note-taking supplies (paper & pen)
Setup:
Primitive cultures tolerated dogs in their camps only because they would eat smelly scraps and scare off intruders. But eventually humans began caring for animals as pets—from dogs and cats to birds, goldfish, rabbits, and more. How do we treat our pets today? What rights do they have? How are pets protected?
Activity:
In this activity, you will interview an animal-rescue worker to understand more about what they do and how the pandemic and stay-at-home orders changed animal-rescue work.
First, research where your local animal-rescue/adoption centers are. You can find this information online.
Then, contact one and ask to interview a rescue worker (over the phone or video chat). Ask the rescue worker about the animal issues in your community and what it’s like to have a career protecting animals. What changes in animal care, fostering, and adoption have happened since the start of the pandemic? What was most challenging? Were there any benefits to people being at home and adopting more pets? Share your interview with other Girl Scouts during your next virtual or socially distant meeting.
