Triennial Theme, 2009 – 2011
Girls worldwide say "together we can change our world" will be the WAGGGS global action theme beginning in 2009. It is a continuation of the triennial themes that have gone before. And it is based on the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to end poverty by 2015. The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) is committed to sustainability, integrity and the environment which are also core themes for the Millennium Development Goals. World Thinking Day themes will be consistent with the Global Action themes. For the next three years and beyond, each World Thinking Day will focus on a different MDG. In 2009, the World Thinking Day theme will be girls worldwide say "we can stop the spread of AIDS, malaria and other diseases" linking to MDG 6 about epidemics such as AIDS and malaria. Member organizations can make use of the WAGGGS AIDS toolkit as part of their World Thinking Day activities. In 2010, the theme will be girls worldwide say "together we can end extreme poverty and hunger", which links to MDG 1 on poverty and hunger and our work with the United Nation's Food & Agriculture Organization. And in 2011, it will be girls worldwide say "we can save our planet" linking to MDG 7 about environmental sustainability, and WAGGGS is working jointly with the UN on a publication on climate change. With the new Global Action Theme and its supporting materials, WAGGGS hopes to inspire girls and young women to play their part, together, we can change our world! More information can be found on the WAGGGS Web site. |
