Internship - Leadership Case Studies Analysis Intern Summary of Position The Girl Scout Research Institute (GSRI) is a center for research and public policy information on the healthy development of girls as they mature toward adulthood. The goals of the GSRI are to originate new projects and initiatives that bolster knowledge about girls, as well as to synthesize the research that exists on girls. The Program Evaluation and Outcomes Measurement (PEOM) division of GSRI is leading the effort to evaluate the impact of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, and providing data to assist all those who are a part of our movement—girls, adult volunteers, and staff—in improving the Girl Scout experience for girls. Beginning October 1, 2009, the PEOM team will be conducting a yearlong case study project on a select group of girls nationwide. The goals of the project are to gain a better understanding of 1) what personal aspects of girls’ lives contribute to their leadership skills and 2) how today’s girls take on leadership roles in their daily lives. The Leadership Case Studies Analysis Intern will be responsible for assisting the PEOM team in analyzing digital qualitative data from girls of different cultural and geographic backgrounds across the United States to help us achieve these goals. The primary objective for the Analysis Intern will be to gather and assist in developing foundational ideas for the final project. She/he will work collaboratively with the PEOM team as well as other interns to inform the direction of the final analysis and the Production Intern’s final project. The Analysis Intern will be expected to submit a written report on the project at the end of each semester and a brief evaluation on completion of the internship. Responsibilities: • Research literature on leadership among girls • Provide written literature review on leadership among girls • View, organize, and code digitized written, audio, and video data • Assist other interns in logging video and transcribing essential clips • Assist in quantitative and qualitative data analysis to generate theory • Submit a final written report at the end of the fall semester • Submit internship evaluation Job Qualifications • College junior, senior, or graduate student in good standing • Preferred majors: gender studies, anthropology, cultural studies, sociology, communications, applied linguistics, psychology, or related fields • Knowledge of film/video techniques (preferred) • Ability to synthesize data from disparate sources into a cohesive narrative • Basic knowledge of quantitative methods (a plus) • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel (required) • Proficiency in qualitative data analysis software such as NVivo or Ethnograph (preferred) • Excellent written and organizational skills • Ability to work under tight deadlines Project duration: October 1, 2009–June 1, 2010 Hours: 20 per week Stipend: $6,400 for the year, payable on a monthly basis Special Instructions Deadline: November 1, 2009, or until the position is filled How to Apply Visit www.girlscouts.org/careers.
