Community Outreach and Education
Girl Scouting builds community. By giving a voice to the under-represented and reaching out to those in need, girls bridge gaps, heal wounds, and create lasting connections. Whether working towards earned grade-level awards like the Citizen Near and Far Try-It or the My Community Badge, girls improve their schools and neighborhoods and develop an understanding of their important place in a complex world. Girl Scouts of the USA is committed to ensuring that all girls have an opportunity to build extraordinary lives and join with those around them in making the world a better place.

Follow the Reader: A Girl Scout Family Reading Project
In a society in which illiteracy remains a prevalent issue, the Follow the Reader bilingual family literacy series is designed to promote a love for reading among girls and their families. Designed for ages 5-11, the series content is based on the five objectives of the White House literacy initiative No Child Left Behind: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The family-centered books, funded in part by SBC Foundation, are completely bilingual (English and Spanish) and offer families the opportunity to read together using the language in which they feel most comfortable.
