For the nearly four million Girl Scout members, Halloween marks more than a day of festivities. It's also the birthday of their organization's founder, Juliette Gordon Low.

Low was born on October 31, 1860, and formed Girl Scouts of the USA shortly after her 51st birthday. World events like the Women's Rights movement shaped Low's strong belief that women could be valuable contributors to society. In forming Girl Scouts of the USA, Low's vision was to bring this idea to girls and inspire them to reach their potential.

From the first meeting in 1912, the basic values that form the foundation of Girl Scouts today were already in place. Alongside volunteers, girls explored the arts, social responsibility, and careers. Today, more than 90 years later, Girl Scouts stay true to Juliette Gordon Low's vision and, alongside adult mentors, discover their own abilities.
