Fall 2003 Highlights

Aim high—discover how Girl Scouting empowers girls to find the courage and initiative to tackle what really matters, and to reach for the highest goal they can. That's the message in the fall 2003 LEADER.

Start at our nation's helm with the high-achieving women of Congress in Troop Capitol Hill. These senators and representatives describe how Girl Scouting prepared them for the leadership roles they fill and why they continue to partner with the Girl Scouts today.

Every year more than 3,000 girls aim for the Girl Scout Gold Award by planning and executing significant community service projects. What type of women do these go-for-it girls become? Find out in "Whatever Became of…?" This article showcases the achievements of five young to middle-aged women. The article also highlights this year's Girl Scout Gold Award Young Women of Distinction, who were honored in Washington, D.C. last March.

To see how girl planning occurs at the national level, read "By Girls, For Girls: Teens Having Their Say," a report on the By Girls, For Girls National Advisory Committee's first meeting.

Do you feel high-adventure trips are too risky? Work through your fears to avoid short-changing the girls you advise in "High-Adventure Trips!" Discover how to safely explore other countries, climb glaciers or hike in wilderness—and become inspired by troops who have! Move on to "Stewards of the Earth," a profile of three natural scientists, women who took risks and followed their dream.

Could your troop plan a trip to one of America's magnificent national parks? Absolutely! In this issue, GSUSA's GirlSports Consultant Wendy DeGiglio provides an overview of the national park system. Enjoy her spirited account of her own visit to Yellowstone last winter.

Two new columns, "News and Views" and "Just for Volunteers," debut in this issue. News and Views features research, news and points of view about girls and their world. Just for Volunteers will address topics specifically for the adult Girl Scout. Just for Volunteers premieres with "Getting to Yes: Sensible Strategies for Volunteer Recruitment," an article brimming with advice for volunteers working with girls.
