Alumnae Story
Quitting Girl Scouts

I have so many fond memories of Girl Scouting, but I guess the most important one was when I was in the second grade and I wanted to quit Girl Scouts. We had just finished the bridging ceremony and I was convinced that Girl Scouts was not for me. I told my mom that I didn't want to be a Girl Scout anymore because it wasn't cool. She told be that it was my decision, but that I would have to let Mrs. Worthing, my leader at the time, know. So I walked up to Mrs. Worthing, and said that this was going to be my last year as I didn't want to be a Girl Scout anymore. She looked me right in the face and said, "Well I'm sorry to hear that, but I guess I'll see you around." It wasn't quite the response I was expecting, I thought for sure that someone was going to make a big deal about this. That night I went home and I cried. It was at that point that I realized I wanted to be a Girl Scout.

The following year when I came to the first meeting of the year, I walked in the door and Mrs. Worthing said to me, "I knew you'd be back." It was at that point that I knew Girl Scouting was in my blood. I went on to earn my Gold Award and was embraced by my entire high school on accomplishing my goals. It was a really fun and memorable experience to have so many classmates interested in my Gold Award project and wondering when cookie sales were. My school allowed me to have a cookie booth at lunch time and during sporting events. Anytime I'm telling someone a story about what I did in Girl Scouts, I always think back to that day when my mom and Mrs. Worthing let me make my choice, and I thank them both for allowing me to make the right one.
