Alumnae Story
Singing 'Barges'
By Gail Mills
College Station, Texas
As a young girl, I moved a lot all over the country and even to a couple of foreign countries. Each time we would move, my parents would tell me, don't worry about leaving your friends, you'll make new friends where we are going (Make new friends...but keep the old...!)
Well, it was true and a very big part of that process was the Girl Scout program. Wherever we went, I was able to find a group of Girl Scouts and voila! I had a built-in new set of friends. I always felt welcomed and always fit in because the program is so universal.
From Brownies to a First Class Senior Scout, I enjoyed the program immensely. When I later had two little girls, we all became involved in Girl Scouting again. I had not realized how much I missed it. This time I was the parent/troop leader for both my girls and was able to share my enthusiasm for the program with them. Both earned their Silver Award and spent many, many hours involved in all aspects of the program. They are grown now, but one day perhaps we will have another generation of Scouts in the family!
I have enjoyed Girl Scouting and really think it is a wonderful program for girls (and their mothers!!) Kudos to Girl Scouts everywhere!
