Alumnae Story
1956 Senior Roundup: Chance Meeting After 30 Years

By Carolynn Todd Henry
Las Cruces, N.M.

I was one of the fortunate ones selected to attend the Senior Roundup in 1956. At the time, my father was stationed at Fort Benning, Ga. Another girl and I from Benning were part of the Patrol from Georgia. We traveled to near Atlanta to board the train with the others to continue to Cincinnatti to connect with the Girl Scout train (similar to troop trains during World War II) to go to Detroit.

One of the highlights was seeing Charleton Heston (at the time making the Ten Commandments). Of course, he was just a small speck from where I was sitting. Another was going back through Washington, D.C., and getting to tour there on our way back to Georgia.

In the late 1980s, as a leader and trainer in Las Cruces, N.M., I met a woman from Deming who had represented New Mexico at the Roundup and we worked together as trainers.
